The Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians is proud to develop our Senior Raised Bed Garden as part of our expanding Tribal Farm and Garden Program. Designed with accessibility and comfort in mind, this garden will provide Tribal elders and seniors with opportunities to grow fresh vegetables, remain active, and reconnect with agricultural traditions passed down through generations. Elevated garden beds will reduce the physical demands of gardening, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for seniors and individuals with mobility challenges.
Our elders are the keepers of generations of agricultural knowledge, family traditions, and cultural teachings. Through support from the Cultivating Communities Grant, we are making our Senior Raised Bed Garden more accessible by incorporating improvements that will allow elders and individuals with disabilities to participate more comfortably and independently in gardening activities. This investment will help create an inclusive, intergenerational space where elders can share their knowledge with younger Tribal members while enjoying the physical, social, and emotional benefits of gardening. Together, we are cultivating more than vegetables—we are growing accessibility, community connections, and opportunities to preserve our agricultural heritage for future generations.
