Our tribal community can document our Native lineage through eight family lines. We are very blessed to have such a rich heritage of Native ancestors rooted to our community.
Our Varner line stems from Rose and her children. William Varner, Jr was the son of William Varner and Rose. He married Mary Williams. He also had many brothers and
sisters. Most of our elders remember his brother, Marion Varner who lived in our community. Our focus is to bring awareness of our ancestors and how each member ties in to our Native
ancestry. We know of his descendants because they lived in our community and we extended an invitation of membership to those descendants. But there were other children of
Rose: Jane, David, Margret, Hannah, Eliza, and Lavinia.
When we applied for State Recognition in 2004, we stated Rose as our progenitor as well as her children. We listed the children of William Varner, Jr and his descendants in our genealogy
because those were our members at the time of submission. This did not exclude the descendants of Rose’s other children. These descendants of Rose would be eligible for membership to our
state recognized tribe as well.
We, the Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians, recognize our family. We are thrilled to know that there are descendants of Rose from William Jr., Jane, David, Margaret, Hannah, Eliza, Lavinia,
and Marion who are interested in their Native American heritage. By our by-laws, any descendant of Rose can submit application to our tribe for membership.
